Yes. It will work.
As long as you configured your vm environment properly, (in terms performance, fault tolerancy etc) and according to your licenses no big cons. As long as your vm hypervisor and server is certified with Oracle (vmware is certified bytheway), it is safe. Just standard vm vs pyshical pros and cons. The world goes towards virutalization and dockerization, so no big cons.
Just watch out for the waits that may be introduced due to emulations (cpu and IO perf).
Vm related things are important, like VM - Oracle - Storage I/O alignment.. Stuff like that. your vm admin and your vm vendor (documentation) will help you on these things.
