Migratiom to new vm

Hi erman,

We currently have an Oracle E-Business Suite environment with the following configuration:

- EBS version: 12.5
- Database: Oracle Database 19.17
- Source platform: Physical servers
- Source OS: RHEL 7.9

We are planning to migrate the existing physical environment to new VM-based servers and are considering using the Rapid Clone approach.

We would like to get some guidance regarding the target operating system.

1. If the source environment is running RHEL 7.9 and we provision the target VMs with RHEL 8, can we perform the migration using Rapid Clone?

Would moving from RHEL 7.9 to RHEL 8 introduce any additional migration effort compared with RHEL 7.9 → RHEL 7.9?

2. Alternatively, if we use Oracle Linux 8 (OEL 8) on the target VMs, can the existing RHEL 7.9 EBS environment be migrated using Rapid Clone?

- Would moving from RHEL 7.9 to OEL 8 introduce any additional migration effort compared with RHEL 7.9 → RHEL 8?
- Are there any specific EBS, database, OS package, or technology-stack prerequisites that need to be completed before the clone?

3. Considering that we have a limited migration window of approximately one month, would it be safer from a migration-effort and risk perspective to keep the target OS the same as the source (RHEL 7.9), and then plan the OS migration separately?

EBS 12.5 doesn't exist — you mean 12.2.5 I guess.

Q1 – RHEL 7→8: Rapid Clone works, but expect relinking (DB + EBS stack). More effort than RHEL 7→ RHEL 7.

Q2 – OEL 8: Almost same as RHEL 8, no difference. Prereqs: OS packages, AD/TXK patches, relink after clone.

Q3 – Recommendation: Keep RHEL 7.9→7.9. Less risk, tight window. Upgrade OS separately later. An in-place upgrade may be done. -> https://blogs.oracle.com/ebstech/inplace-upgrade-from-oracle-linux-7-to-8-now-certified-for-ebs-122
