RMAN - EM

Roshan
Hi,

I have scheduled daily backups(incremental 1) on Enterprise Manager. I have also set the recovery window to 5 days. I have noticed the backup sets keep on increasing.

As seen in the above picture, there are 10 backupsets. The number of backupsets keeps on increasing.

Does RMAN automatically delete the obsolete backups after the 5 day retention policy?

Thanks,
Roshan

Hi,

You need to use delete obsolete command. "Delete obsolete" command will delete all the obsoleted backup according to the retention policy. Rman does not delete obsolete backups automatically.

Hi,

a full backup was taken on 30/06/2016. When I do report obsolete I see the backupset on 30/06/2016 listed among the obsolete backups. If I do delete obsolete and removes the full backup on 30/06/2016, will the recovery fail?

Thanks,
Roshan

The recovery window based retention policy works that way. İt will not delete that full backup in your case. In your situation, you need to have at least one more recent backup to make your full backup obsolete.

Please read oracle documentation. İt seems your understanding on rman retention policies, is not clear yet.

Update,: if it ll delete that backup, then it means you have a more recent full backup that satisfies the retention policy. Please read oracle documentation and get the idea.
